Domus
de janas
They are tombs dug in the rock often
according to a labyrinth architecture,
which develops in different little rooms.
Such a structure has suggested the name
Domus de Jana's that in the Sardinian
language means
"House of the fairies or of the
witches". On the island they are
about a thousand.
The Domus de Jana's concentrate above
all in the area of Sulcis - Iglesiente.
The most important ones are placed in
S'Andrea Priu near Bonorva (SS), in
Monteessu, between Santadi and Villaaperuccio
(CA), and in the area of Alghero, with
the necropolis of Anghelu Ruju.
Giants
Tombs
They are tombs that were destined to
the tribal chiefs. They are 325 on the
whole island. Their name comes from
their particular architectural structure
that presents at the centre of an exedra
of flat stones an imposing stele several
metres high, as if it were a door towards
the hereafter.
We suggest the visit of the tomb of
Sa Domu e ' S'Orcu, which offers a particularly
striking spectacle: its shape draws
the tureen horns, which were an ancient
symbol of fertility. This grave is situated
near Quartucciu, not far from Cagliari.
